Angiogenesis Could Hold the Key to One of the World’s Deadliest Diseases – Cancer

Most of us know someone who has cancer, and that only shows how prevalent this deadly disease has become. According to statistics, around 39.6 percent of all people will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their life.

In fact, it’s the second most common cause of death in the U.S., which is why billions of dollars are spent on high-tech research every year. Still, nothing seems to be strong enough to stop cancer.

Besides the conventional treatment, which in this case includes chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, etc., there’s the alternative therapy which can aid the cancer treatment.

A lot of people start avoiding lots of foods and drinks as part of the alternative therapy for cancer. According to many researchers, the worst foods for a person with cancer are processed foods and refined sugar.

Angiogenesis: What Is It and Why It Matters

It’s the formation of new blood vessels. The word angiogenesis comes from “angio” – which means blood vessels, while the meaning of “genesis” is creation. Did you know that our body has 19 million capillaries and the total blood vessel length is 60,000 miles?

But, your body can control how many blood vessels it has at a specific time, adapting them to the environment.

This blood vessel creation happens all the time, during health and disease. Your blood transports nutrients and oxygen throughout your body with the help of blood vessels. So, when a new tissue is created, new blood vessels must develop to enable its growth and maintenance. In other words, what happens is angiogenesis.

A healthy body can control angiogenesis, fertilizing and pruning vessels as needed. But, in presence of a disease, it can’t always grow new blood vessels or prune them back when necessary, according to research.

So, when your body has too many blood vessels, health problems such as arthritis, cancer, endometriosis, blindness, Alzheimer’s, and obesity are fueled.

On the other hand, lack of blood vessels could result in slow wound healing, peripheral artery disease, hair loss, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

When cancer is the case, tumors release specific proteins, growth factors, which direct the blood vessels to grow inside the tumor.

As a result, the tumor gets the necessary nutrients and oxygen for growing, at the same time providing an escape route for cancer cells to spread in other areas.

In fact, imbalanced angiogenesis is a common characteristic of more than 70 worldwide diseases, including cancer. Even though they may look totally different, a detailed analysis proved the presence of imbalanced angiogenesis in all of them.

This discovery has allowed scientists to re-conceptualize the treatment and prevention of diseases.

Cancer Starts as a Nest of Harmless Cells

The angiogenic imbalance is a common characteristic of all types of cancer. All cancers start as a harmless group of cells whose size can’t grow more than that of the tip of a ballpoint pen on their own due to lack of blood supply, which means lack of oxygen and nutrients.

But, autopsy studies proved the presence of harmless, microscopic cancers even in people whose death was caused by a car accident.

Researchers found microscopic breast cancers in 40% of the women between the age of 40 and 50, and microscopic prostate cancer in 50% of the men between the age of 50 and 60.

As researchers explain, we will all have microscopic groups of cancer cells in the thyroid gland by the time we reach 70 years. But, most of these nests of cells will never develop into something serious because they won’t have a blood supply to survive.


Since the creation of new blood vessels will supply the cancer cells with oxygen and nutrients, it’s logical to think that the tumor will no longer get the necessary “food” if the blood supply is stopped, resulting in its death.

So, this theory was tested in many angiogenesis studies, resulting in success in both humans and animals.

The Medical Director and President of the Angiogenesis Foundation, Dr. William Li, has studied the new medicine based on angiogenesis in the fight against diseases, and the attempt to restore the body’s natural ability to regulate angiogenesis.

The testing of medical therapies that inhibit or promote new blood vessels growth has proven to be successful.

Novel cancer drugs based on the anti-angiogenesis approach have been successfully tested in people and approved by the FDA to improve the life-quality and increase the survival of people living with cancer.

While many types of cancer responded well to the drugs based on the anti-angiogenesis approach, others didn’t.

So, Dr. Li did more research and found that cancer in advanced stages is almost impossible to cure with this anti-angiogenesis therapy, as it has already spread to many parts of the body. On the other hand, cancer in early stages responded well to this approach.

There’s a wide range of foods that have naturally occurring anti-angiogenesis properties which can stop the creation of new blood vessels. Some foods are more effective in this than others, but they work together to cause cancer cell starvation.
